Objective To create a rapid hyperlipidemic model of the gerbils andanalyze the relations between hyperlipidemia and atherogenesis in thegerbils. Methods The semi-purified diet for eight rats, eight mice, eight gerbilscontained 1% cholesterol in the first experiment.Serum TC,TG, LDL-C andHDL-C among three groups were measured at zero day,the first week, thesecond week ,the third week and the forth week.Ten gerbils in theexperimental group were fed with the diet 1% cholesterol,10% lard and10% yolk powder.Eight gerbils in control group were fed with normal diet.Serum TC,TG, LDL-C and HDL-C of gerbils in two groups were measuredat zero day,the 7th day ,the 30th day ,the 60th day,the 90th day and the120th day. Results In the first experiment, serum TC, LDL-C and HDL-C ofgerbils reached a stable high level at first week and the stable state waskept up to the forth week, but serum TG did not change . Serum TC,TG,LDL-C and HDL-C in rats and mice did not change ,either. In the secondexperiment, serum TC, LDL-C and HDL-C of gerbils in experimentalgroup were much higher than those in control group during the fourmonths, which was major in increasing LDL-C concentration.Fatty liver, hepatocirrhosis, spleen intumescence and aortic atherogenesis wereobserved in experimental group. Conclusion Rapid hyperlipidemic model of the gerbils can be created .Aortic atherogenesis in gerbils can be induced by increasing serum lipidlevel.
