OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to find out the outcome of the children with congenital asymtomatic HCMV infection.METHODS 20 children who came from neonatal department from April, 2003 to December, 2004 were determined as congenital asymtomatic HCMV infection by detecting sera HCMV-DNA with FQ-PCR at the first 2 weeks after birth. They took short-term follow-up by Otoacoustic emission (OAE) and Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) to determine the hearing loss and Bayley scale of infant development to determine intellectual development deficits at 6 month to 3 years. 16 children who came from neonatal department from December, 1999 to December, 2000 were determined as congenital asymtomatic HCMV infection by the same method at the first 2 weeks after birth. At 4-5 years old after they were determined as normal hearing by ABR they took long-term follow-up with Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), Wechsles Preschool and primary scales of intelligence (WPPS1) to determine the intelligence deficits, Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to determine abnormal behavior, and Physical examine to determine physique devolopment.RESULT 1 Among 20 asymptomatic children with short-term follow-up , 7 ears had increased threshold of ABR V wave. It is significant different with the control group; Comparing the Bayley scale of asymptomatic group (MDI110.89±11.21; PDI112.44 ± 19.26) with the control group(MDI108.50± 17.05; PDI107.00± 10.84), there is no difference. 2. Among 16 asymptomatic children with normal hearing who took long-term follow-up, the score of PPVT and vocabulary of WPPS1 (84.67 ± 36.77; 11.14 ± 2.69 respectively)of asymptomatic group is lower than that of the control group(102.3 ± 11.64; 13.2 ± 2.0 respectively), the difference is significant. No difference was found between the two groups comparing the score of WPPS1 subscales as information, comprehension, arithmetic, similarities, digit span, digif ymbol, picture completion, block design, picture arrangement or object assembly. No difference was found between the two groups comparing the score of full scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ), verbal intelligence quotient (VIQ) nor performance intelligence quotient (PIQ). Comparing the behavior of the two groups by the rough score of CBCL, no significant difference was found though the mean score of the asymptomatic group is higher than that of the control group. Comparing the physique devolopment by the weight, height and head circumference, no significant...
