Purpose:To investigate the prevalence and features of shallow anterior chamber in a population of routine health examination And to observe the progress of limbal anterior chamber depth and gonioscopy by investigation this re-examinated population of routine health examination in our hospital.Subjects and methods:The object is a population who had received routine health examination in our hospital from October 2003 to April 2004 and those who had received re-examination in this time. Each subject underwent the following investigations: visual acuity, slit lamp examination and slit-lamp assessment of anterior chamber depth according to the Van Herick grading method involved assessment of the limbal anterior chamber depth as a fraction of the corneal thickness(CT). Enrolled patients whose limbal chamberdepth were less than or equal to l/2CT(Van Herrick Grades 2, lor Slit) were examined by non-contact tonometry, A ultrasound scan, examination of refraction and gonioscopy. And we contrast the data of two tims. Results:Totle number of these people is 11562 persons(23124 eyes). 1922 eyes(8.31%) were termed Van Herrick Grades 3, 2, 1 or Slit. Actually, 1236 eyes were examined. The prevalence of shallow anterior chamber increased significantly with age using chi-square test (P<0.001) . Axial oculi and axial anterior chamber depthand diopterlinearly increased with limbal anterior chamber depth. Totle number of the re-examination people is 380 persons(760 eyes).681 eyes were fractionated as Van Herrick Grades 4.Among this, 29eyes has progress of limbal chamber depth. The number of Van Herrick Grades 3 eyes which had not received any therapy is 55. Among this ,there's 9 eyes has progress of limbal chamber depth. Totle 36 eyes of these 38 eyes which has progress are over 40years old. And the progress rate of Van Herrick Grades 4 eyes is significantly lower than it in Van Herrick Grades 3 onesConclusion:The limbal anterior chamber depth changes shallower with the age. Shallow limbal anterior chamber is more common in females. The age of eyes which has progress is almostly between 40 to 60. The possibility of progress in Van Herrick Grades 3 eyes is more thanVan Herrick Grades 4 ones. The time of follow-up is not enough.
