Background and purpose :Chronic gastritis is a common disease of internal medicine , which is characterized as chronic gastric mucosal inflammation or atrophic lesion result from different etiology . There are some studies regarding the gastric emptying of chronic gastritis at present . But most of them are concerning the influence on gastric emptying induced by Helicobacter Pylori or bile reflux . Little attention was paid to the effect of mucosal erosion on gastric motility , neither the correlation between the gastric emptying and symptoms . Even there are controversial viewpoint about it. The present study was designed to investigate whether gastric mucosal erosion modify the gastric emptying and the correlation between the gastric emptying and symptoms . Which may provide the testimony for clinical diagnosis and therapy .Methods:1. Patients :75 patients of GI out-patient clinic in our hospital ranged from June 2004 to September 2004 were enrolled in the study . Thirty males and forty five females , age range 19-72 years (41.29+10.81 years).(1) Including standard : ① all the patient suffered from dyspepsia symptoms, ②underwent blood routine , hepatic and renal function , upper abdominal B-ultrasound before the study . ③ diagnosed chronic gastritis with gastroscopy andpathology . ④ didn't use any drugs which may affect the gastric motility in recent week.(2) Excluding standard : ① have a history of gastric surgery . ② peptic ulcer, gastric polyp or gastric carcinoma with chronic gastritis. ③ with systemic disease , such as cardiac disease , pulmonary disease , endocrine metabolic disease , connective tissue disease or renal dysfunction .④ lactation or gestation women . 2^ Method :(1) underwent gastroscopy .(2) each patient complete a detailed questionnaire through a conversation with the same doctor . Symptom score was recorded from 0 to 3 according to the severity degree of these symptoms : upper abdominal distention , upper abdominal pain , early overeating , upper abdominal discomfort, belching and nausea .(3) Evaluation of the gastric emptying using barium sticks : each patient took a standard food at 6AM and underwent the radiological examination after five hours . Count the number of the barium sticks which had been passed out of the stomach .3^ Statistical analysis :Mann—Whitney test was used to compare the difference of gastric emptying rate between the group erosion and group non-erosion . Analyzing the correlation between gastric emptying and symptoms or age by partial correlation analysis . xl test was used to check the age and gender information between group erosion and group non-erosion . All the data were analyzed by SPSS 11.0 for windows .Results :(1) Group erosion : 22 patients , 10 males and 12 females . Age : 19-39 years :10 cases , 40~59 years : 9 cases , ≥60 years : 3 cases . Group non-erosion : 53 patients , 20 males and 33 females . Age :19~39 years :23 cases , 40—59 years : 29 cases , ≥60 years : 1 cases . No statistical difference in the age and gender between the two group (P>0.05).(2) Group erosion : 5 hours gastric emptying rate were 100 ± 25.00% (skewnessdistribution sample , median ± quartile interval ) , mean emptying rate was 82.95% . Group non-erosion : 5 hours gastric emptying rate were 85 ± 55.00% , mean emptying rate was 62.17% . There was significant difference in the gastric emptying rate between the two groups (P<0.05).(3) There is negative correlation between the gastric emptying and the symptom score of upper abdominal distention (P<0.05) , correlation coefficient r is —0.243 .(4) No correlation between the gastric emptying and the symptom score of upper abdominal pain , upper abdominal discomfort, early overeating , belching and nausea (P>0.05).(5) No correlation between the gastric emptying and the age (P>0.05).Conclusion :The present study indicate that in chronic gastritis patients , the gastric emptying rate of that with mucosal erosion is higher than that non-erosion . The exact mechanism is not clear yet. Maybe that mucosal injury directly alte...
