| Objective: The Rheumatoid Arthitis(RA) with high incidence in adult belongs to rheumatism. The symptom of the joint similar with malignant tumor for it's complicated pathogenesis. The aim of the research is to estimate the effect of TongBiTang in improving symptom , living quality conditions and reducing side effect from Western medicines,then to discuss it's mechanism and foreground. Methods: Sixty patients with RA were divided into treatment and control groups randomly. Among 30 cases in the treatment group, male patients were 3 and female 27. The average age was 45.5±6.7 years old and the average course of diseases was 8.2±4.5 years old. Among 30 cases in the control groups, male patients were 5 and female 25. The average age was 47.0±6.5 years old and the average course of diseases was 10.0±5.2 years old. The general condition of two groups of patients had no statistic difference. All belonged to deficiency of the liver-yin and the kidney-yin and stagnation of phlegm-blood according to TCM. The control group were treated with traditional comprehensive therapy of WM, including SSZ+MTX + NSAIDS; On the basis of those same therapy ,TongBiTang was added in treatment group: accrue Rehmanniae 30g ,cooked Rehmanniae 30g, Eucommia Bark 15g, Scorpion 10g, Pangolin Scales 1.5g(swallowed powder), Chinese Angelica 15g, Clematis Root 12g, Common Floweringquince Fruit 18g, Suberect Spatholobus Stem 15g, White Mustard Seed 15g, Ephedra Herb 15g, Japanese Snailseed Root 10g, Twotooth Achyranthes Root 10g, Mulberry Twig 10g, White Paeony Root 20g, Liquoric Root 6g. If patients has obvious excessive phlegm-heat, Ephedra Herb and White Mustard Seed should be got rid of, and Japanese Honeysuckle Stem 30g , Earthworm 20g, and Arisaema Consanguineum 6g were added; if deficiency of Qi, Astragalus Membranaceus 12g and Codonopsis Pilosula 15g was added; if blood stasis evidence, Leech 5g, Peach Seed 15g and Safflower 15g were added; if nausea, JiaoSanXian 15g and Jineijin 12g were added. Take one dosage a day, two times with lukewarm water, one course is 30 day. Compare the symptoms, signs(consisting of ache, tumefaction, ankylosis, and function classification of arthrosis, grip of both hands ,ESR,CRP, et al) of the two groups of patients between before and after therapy. Results: 1. Comparison of the clinical curative efficacy on two groups of patients: The total availability of the treatment group was 93.3%, while the control group was 76.7%. It shows that the additional use of TongBiTang can improve clinical treatment effect of patients with RA compared with therapy of WM alone(P<0.05). 2. Comparison of the melioration in main symptoms andsigns(consist of ache, tumefaction, ankylosis, and grip of both hands) and function classification of two groups: After treatment, the changes in those symptoms and signs were both effective, but The treatment group was prior to the control group significant(P<0.05). It prompt that TongBiTang can relax the arthrosis inflammation and improve the whole function. 3. Laboratorial index: ESR and CRP which reflect activity on RA were both declined in two groups(P<0.05). The change of ESR in treatment group was comparatively distinct. 4. Comparison of badness response on two groups of patients: The degree of side effects in course of therapy was obviously reduced in treatment group, compared with control group(P<0.05). These side effects which contain nausea, spew and damage of liver or kidney were mainly caused from CM. So TongBiTang has some efficacy in counteracting the side effects of CM. Conclusions: 1. TongBiTang can improve the symptoms and signs of the patients with RA obviously. ESR and CRP were reduced effectively. In control group, the symptoms and signs of the patients were also improved. But through SPSS satistic software's process, the treatment group was superior to the control group significantly(P<0.05). 2.
