Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effects of SOD as a free radical scavenger on experimental serve acute pancreatitis. Methods: fifty four female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three group: sham-operation group; SAP group and SOD-pretreated group.Pancreatitis was induced by intraductal administration of 5% sodium taurocholate 0.1ml/kg.SOD pretreated group were given SOD at a dosage of 20,000u/kg body weight .Rats in the three group were killed at 3, 6, 12 hours after induction of the model. We detected serum amylase ,serum MDA ,serum superoxide dismutase and pancreatic pathology. Results: The level of serum amylase increased significantly in SAP group than those in SOD-pretreated group (P<0.05 ) . The level of serum SOD in SOD-pretreated group increased at 3,6 hours (P<0.05 ) .In the contrast, The level of serum MDA was significantly lower than those in SAP group at 3,6 hours (P<0.05) . The scores of pancreatic pathohistology decreased in SOD-pretreated group than those in SAP group at 3 hours (P<0.05 ) . Conclution: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) reduced tissue damage, biochemical alterations and had therapeutic effect on the development of acute pancreatitis.
