Objective To depict the pattern of overall unintentional injuries among elementary school children in Maanshan City. To explore the risk factors of unintentional injuries and to attempt to offer the evidence and threads for local injury prevention and control. To evaluate the effect of an injury prevention program by means of health education on the occurrence of overall unintentional injuries. Methods The method of cluster randomized controlled trial was used in this study. Injury intervention programme was implemented in the intervention group. At the same time some activities, such as food safety and common diseases prevention, were carried out in the schools of control group. Analysis of description was used to provide the whole picture of injury pattern. Negative binomial regression and polytomous Logistic regression were employed to assess the risk factors of total injuries and recurrent injuries, respectively. Results Retrospective survey of baseline showed that both groups had similar levels of injury incidence before intervention. Outcome evaluation findings demonstrated significant difference of rates between two groups after intervention (P<0.001). The incidence of intervention group was 10.74% less than the one of control group. The "intervention" variable acted as a protection factor in the follow-up analysis (P<0.001) and it seemed that such intervention contributed to reduction of recurrent injuries more than it did to normal injuries defined in this study. In addition, it was reavealed that the intervention of health education for student injury had instant effect on reduction of injury and led to changes of some injury characteristics. Conclusions The intervention programme appears to be an effective method for injury prevention especially recurrent injury prevention. Moreover, we could expect preventive strategy targeting the recurrent injured children will be particularly useful and effective. But in thisprogramme long-term effect was not assessed so further study is needful and anticipated.
