Objective: To investigate the effects of peril la seed oil on regulating blood lipids and its safety as a healthy food. Methods: Acute toxicity test, 30 days feeding test and teratogenicity test were carried out to judge the general toxicity and embryotoxicity of perilla seed oil. Ames test, micronucleus test of bone marrow cell as well as chromosome aberration test in mice were used to detect the genetic toxicity and the high blood lipids rat model was established with high fatty diet to observe the effects of perilla seed oil on regulating the lever of blood lipids. Results: There no toxicities, teratogenicity and mutabginicity were founded during the tests that have been done. The data from high blood lipids rat model showing that perilla could reduce the levers of triglyceride(TG), T-cholesterol(TC) and Low density lipoprotein-cholesterol(LDL-C) in serum and increase the lever of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C) and all with a obvious dose-response relationship . Conclusion: perilla seed oil has an active effect on regulating the levers of blood lipids. It is safe for human to use as a healthy food.
