Objectives: Primarily to research the awareness of the concept of essential drugs of medical professionals and find out factors affecting the extent to which they understand it. And to provide necessary information for implementing national essential drugs policy more deeply and developing provincial essential drugs programs. Methods: By simple random sampling we selected 3 grade III hospitals and 6 grade II hospitals among general hospitals in Anhui, and in chosen hospitals of each grade 1500 medical professionals were selected in terms of their sectional offices , and a sample of 3000 medical professionals was asked to complete the questionnaire. All data were input into the computer using the software of Epi info 6 and x-test, one-way analysis of variance and logistic analysis were conducted using SPSS to make statistical analysis. Results: (1)Averagely 64.3 percentage of medical professionals know the concept of essential drugs;(2)Medical professionals learn about essential drugs mainly through professional periodicals, documents, academic reports and conferences. Seldom professionals could obtain information about essential drugs from Internet. (3)A low ratio of all the professionals who know the concept were trained about the knowledge of this field, and also a low ratio of them could frequently publicize the concept of essential drugs to patients. (4)Most medical professionals acknowledge that using essential drugs could promote rational drugs use in great extent. (5)Specialties, technical posts, sectional offices, working years and educational levels jointly affect the awareness of essential drugs in medical professionals. Conclusions: The concept of essential drugs has been popularized in medical professionals in certain extent and essential drugs are becoming most preferred by some clinicians. But the understanding is not comprehensive. Professionals are lack of training about the knowledge of this field, especially nurses are.Professionals have done little to propagandize the concept of essential drugs to patients. Clinicians and nurses and phannacists are lack of communication in promoting essential drugs. Suggestions: Government should consummate relative policies in implementing essential drugs policy. It is to set up courses of essential drugs and rational drugs use in medical college. Hospitals should pay more attention to renewing medical professionals' knowledge of rational drug use. Enhancing the communication among doctors and nurses and pharmacists would be propitious for rational drug use and using essential drugs in clinics.
