Objective: To evaluate distribution and expression of vascular endothelial growth factor( VEGF) in the kidneys of IgA nephropathy(IgAN) and their relationship with clinical and pathological manifestations.METHODOLOGY: 26 patients with renal biopsy-proven IgAN enrolled this study, whose renal tissue were subjected to immunohistochemical staining by 4-layed method using monoclonal anti-VEGF antibodies. The relationship of expression pattern of VEGF and clinicopathological manifestation was also investigated.RESULTS: It was found that there were a strong differences in both of the distribution and staining intensity of VEGF in the kidney of patients with IgAN ,There was Increased expression of VEGF in the glomerules ,that glomerular immunol peroxidase anti-Peroxidase staining of VEGF in patients with IgAN( Mesangial proliferative IgAN); There was decreased expression of VEGF in the glomerules ,that glomerular immunol peroxidase anti- Peroxidase staining of VEGF in patients with IgAN((sclerosis of IgAN); The expression of VEGF in theglome rules of Mesangial proliferative IgAN was upregulated correlated to proteinuria (83.3% vs 37.5%, p < 0.01) .No relationship of VEGF upregulation with hypertension was found.CONCLUSION: Upregulated glomerular VEGF expression closely associated with marked proteinuria .VEGF may participate in the glomenrular endothelial impairment.
