Objective To study immunologic factors relating to pathogenesis of ptergium and do pathologic examination of pterygium in order to study its pathologic characters. Methods 1. Using direct immunofluorescent technique to detect T lymphocyte subsets in pterygium and CD4/CD8 ratio. 2. Using microzyme agglutinant test to detect the rosette rate of red blood cell (RBC) C3b receptor and that of RBC immune complex (IC). 3. To calculate lymphocyte and mast cells on the paraffin wax with general or special dye using high multiple microscope in order to observe pathological changes of pterygium. Results 1. Comparing to the control group, the number of T lymphocyte in pterygium were increased. The Th lymphocyte were significantly increased and the Ts lymphocyte were lightly decreased. The CD4/CD8 ratio were increased. In comparisons with the corresponding ratio in the control group, there were significant differences(P<0.01). 2. The rosette rate of RBC C3b receptor was markly lowered and that of RBC IC was significantly increased in cases with pterygium. 3. In progressive pterygium the number of mast cells and lymphocyte locating epithelium and inherent layer was significantly greater than that in the normal epibular conjunctiva. Conclusion The pathogenesis of pterygium involved immunoreaction. Wecan find possible immunologic factors relating to pathogenesis of pterygium through analysing above-mentioned test results. This can provide the clue for clinical doctors preventing and treating this kind of disease which had potential risk of being blindness.
