Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effect of Yiqi Shugan Decoction in treating aged patients with isolated systolic hypertension (ISH). To investigate the rate of Gan-qi-xu Zheng in the elderly ISH according to the Zheng Type of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).Methods: 1. 60 cases of aged patients with ISH were observed and divided into two groups, Gan-qi-xu Zheng (GQXZ)group and No- GQXZ group ,according to the commonly used differentiation of syndromes in TCM.2. Both groups were treated with Yiqi Shugan Decoction(a self-formulated decoction by my tutor) for four weeks. Blood pressure and clinical symptoms were measured before and after treatment respectively. Experimental observation on the effects of the therapeutic effects and the changes of the blood pressure between the two groups were compared. Results: 1. 39 cases (65%) were differentiated as GQXZ and 21 cases (35%) as No-GQXZ in 60 cases of aged patients with ISH.2. In the GQXZ group, SBP was decreased with very significant difference as compared with that in the pre-treatment (P<0.001),and thedescent rate was 19.1%. However, DBP had no significant difference before and after treatment (P>0.05).In the Non-GQXZ group, the difference of the blood pressure (including SBP and DBP) between pre- and post-treatment had no statistic significance (P>0.05).3.The therapeutic effects of improving blood pressure obtained in two groups were different, total effective rate of 89.7% and 47.6% with respectively. There was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.001).4. Total effective rate of improving clinical symptoms were 94.9% and 71.4% respectively, (P<0.05).Conclusion: 1.The deficiency of qi of the Liver is the main pathologic changes in the aged patients with ISH. 2. Yiqi Shugan Decoction has a reliable effct in treating ISH in the elderly, without any obvious adverse effects, and is worthwhile in clinical practice.
