| Cancer pain is one of the most prevalent symptoms experienced by patients with cancer. A high incidence of moderate to severe pain was present at advanced stage of cancer and it seriously influences the patient's quality of life. Palliative treatment such as relief of the cancer pain is one of the most important studies in WHO. But at present, it is lack of ideal effective means in clinic. .Pure western medicine such as three step analgesic ladder is only for symptom and has disappointing result .Tong-kuai-xiao Ba Bu plaster (TKXBBP) is a new external preparation of Chinese medicine for cancer pain designed by professor Li-peiwen accoding to the TCM principles. It is composed of more than ten kinds of herbs.In the clinical study, 65 patients with moderate or severe cancer pain were observed, and were randomly divided into two groups--32 in treating group(that is TKXBBP group) and 33 in control group (that is Qiang-tong-ding injection group). The result showed that TKXBBP was effective in the treatment of cancer pain .the total effective rate was 91%, the obvious remission rate (CR+PR) was 72%,.while in the control group , the total effective rate and the obvious remission rate (CR+PR) was respectively 82% and 51%. The result showed there wasn't statistical significant difference in total effective rate (P>0.05), but the statistical difference was significant in obvious remission rate (P<0.05) between the two groups, and the treating group 's effect was better than the control group on the serious pain (P<0.05). The difference in the onset time of relieving cancer pain was not significant (P>0.05) ,while in the remission period ,the treating group was obviously superior to the control group(P<0.05)TKXBBP showed better effect on the improvement of QOL and satisfactory rate, there was significant difference statistically between the two groups (P<0.01). The effect of TKXBBP relieving pain in different position was different: best for the chest pain and the rid-side pain. According to the TCM syndrome ,the effective rate in typeof stagnation of Gi and blood was higher than in the other types ,such as the type of accumulation of phlegm-dampness, insufficiency of Qi and blood, and so on .The conclusion can be made from the fact: TKXBBP's effect in treating cancer pain was obvious ,its application was safe and convenient .It has showed that external treatment with Chinese medicine had superiority in the treatment of cancer pain ,especially for the patients with advanced stage cancer .
