It is very important to maintain properly erythrocyte rheology characteristic during or after exercise for oxygenic transportation, ejectment of carbon dioxide, microcirculatical perfusion, blood viscosity and its natural physiological function. Contrarily, the decreasing of deformability and excessive aggregation of erythrocyte would block the microcirculation, slower blood flow velocity and supply deficient blood and oxygen in tissues. As a result, it leads to material metabolize blocking between blood and histolytic cell. Furthermore, it affects body energy production and reduces exercise performance. It is necessary to take some protective measures before exercise for maintaining erythrocyte deformability during exercise and speeding up the recovery process of all indexes of red erythrocyte rheology after exercise.A acute exhausting exercise need not only the energy from aerobic oxidation and anaerobic glycolysis of glucose but also from aerobic oxidation of fat. Erythrocytes maintain the deformability of itself needs energy from anaerobic glycolysis of glucose. Carnitine is the necessary carrier of long chain fatty acid into mitochondrion, and it plays an important role in the process of aerobic oxidation of fat. Thereby, supplementation glucose or carnitine or both may well effect on erythrocyte rheology during or after exhausting exercise in rats. The aim of study is to observe the effects of carnitine and glucose supplementation on erythrocyte rheology in acute exhausting exercise of rats.Fifty-four adult male Sprague-Dawley rats are used in this experimental study. All rats ate a "standard diet" and divided randomly into two groups according to the body mass: control groups, supplementation groups.Supplementation groups were supplied extra with glucose or carnitine or glucose+carnitine. After a week, blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation, hematocrit. blood reduction viscosity and erythrocyte rigidity were obtained either within 5min or 24h after acute exhausting exercise in both groups. In conclusion, the findings indicate that:(1) Carntine, glucose and carnitine+glucose supplementation can improve exercise performance in rats.(2) Although carnitine supplementation has little effect on erythrocyte deformability and aggregation of exercise 5min,supplementing camitine can significantly improve resuming speed of erythrocyte of 24h.(3) Glucose supplementation can significantly improve erythrocyte deformability and have lower erythrocyte aggregation of 24 h after a acute exhausting exercise.(4) Carnitine+glucose supplementation can not only improve exercise performance but also speed up the recovery process of all indexes of erythrocyte rheology after exercise in rats.
