Objective To evaluate the clinical effects of T-F Solution (Tinidazole and Furacilin ) in the control of gingivitis and plaque in the patients undergoing orthondontic treatment with fixed appliances. Methods Thirty-six patients with gingivitis,11 to 17 years old,who were undergoing orthondontic treatment with fixed appliances were included in the study. There were 17 boys and 19 girls with mean ages of 14 years and 13.1 years, respectively.Once the patients were accepted in the study.the examiner removed plaque, calculus, and stains from the teeth of the patients by scaling and polishing. Then all these subjects were randomized into three groups:Group A,Group B.Group C.8-10 days after scaling ,plaque index.gingival index ,sulcus bleeding index, discoloration index ,probing depths for tooth numbers 15,13,21,26,35,33,41,46 of each patient were recorded as baseline values. All the subjects received oral and written toothbushing instructions. They were asked to brush teeth twice daily with the same kind of toothbrush and the same kind of toothpaste in the Modified Bass technique.Tooth brushing of each time should last for about three minutes. After toothbrushing.Group A rinsed with placebo.Group B rinsed with 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwashes.Group C rinsed with T-F Solution(AH the subjects in the three groups were instructed to rinse twice daily after breakfast and before bedtime for 30 seconds with 10ml of mouthwashes). After 4 weeks and 8 weeks ,the plaque indexes, gingival indexes, sulcus bleeding indexes were recorded. After 12 weeks all the above mentioned parameters plus the probing depths and discoloration indexes were recorded again.AH the subjects received the instructions of the toothbrushing and the method of rinsing each time. Results There were no statistically significant differences (P>0.05)for the plaque ,gingival, sulcus bleeding indexes among the three groups at baseline,4 weeks,8 weeks. At 12 weeks .except for discoloration index, all the clinical indexes showed lower values in the chlorhexidine group and the T-F Solution group as compared with the placebo group and they were statistically significant (P<0.05).Except for discoloration index.at 4 weeks,8 weeks and 12 weeks.all the means of the clinical parameters showedhigher values at all sites in the T-F Solution group as compared with the chlorhexidine group, but they were not statistically significant(P>0.05).As compared with the chlorhexidine group.the discoloration index was lower in the T-F Solution group at 12 weeks and it was highly statistically significant(P<0.01).In the case of placebo group,as compared with the baseline, except for sulcular bleeding index at 12 weeks, the changes of all the clinical parameters at all sites at 4 weeks,8 weeks and 12 weeks did not show statistically significant differences(P>0.05).The changes over time at all sites of the placebo group, where lower scores were recorded ,as compared with the baseline. In the case of chlorhexidine group.as compared with the baseline, except for discoloration index, all the clinical parameters were lower at all sites at 4 weeks,8 weeks and 12 weeks and the changes over time were statistically significant (P<0.05).The discoloration index was higher at all sites as compared with the baseline in the chlorhexidine group and the changes over time showed highly statistically significant' differences(P<0.01).In the case of group,as compared with' the baseline, except for discoloration index, all the clinical parameters were lower at all sites at 4 weeks,8 weeks and 12 weeks and the changes over time were statistically significant (P<0.05). The discoloration index was higher at all sites as compared with the baseline in the T-F Solution group ,but the changes over time did not show statistically significant differences(P>0.05).Conclusions 1 .The use of the T-F Solution, in addition to regular oral hygine habits.is effective in the control of gingivitis and plaque in adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances.2.The clinical effects of T-F Solution are simil...
