Fructus Viticis,the fruits of Vitex trifolia L.var.simplicifolia cham. and Vitex trifolia L. ,belongs to the family of Verbenaceae. It has been used for analgesic , antiinflammatory, sputum and stridor eliminating in traditional Chinese medicine.In this paper, the RP-HPLC method for evaluating the quality of Fructus Viticis has been established. Casticin as the marker substance, the content of Fructus Viticis was determined by HPLC. By the method, the quality evaluation of various sources of Fructus Viticis has been carried out. As results, the range of content of Casticin is from 0.59mg/g to 2.75mg/g in Fructus Viticis, and content of Casticin in Fructus Viticis is the highest in Qingdao.A method of HPLC-FP of Fructus Viticis was established. By studying comparatively the fingerprints of twelve samples from various sources, 13 peaks have been identified as the general peaks. Among these peaks, the peak of Casticin is taken as the standard one, and the relative retention time and relative peak area of the others are defined as parameters evaluating the quality. Four sections were set up to identify the characteristic of fingerprint. According to the results of cluster analysis, the twelve samples were classified as three clusters.The method can be used to identify and evaluate the quality of Fructus Viticis.
