The fruits of Tribulus terrestris L. is a famous traditional Chinese medicine. It is often used to restore the depressed liver for the treatment of fullness in the chest and mastits and also used to dispel the wind and clear the eyes for the treatment of a acute conjunctivitis, headache and vertigo. Now the pharmacological research of Tribulus terrestris L. is focus on the activities of the steroids and flavouids. It is reported to have antimicrobial, antihypertension, diuretic, antiacetylcholine and haemolytic activity and to stimulate spermatogenesis and libido. Recently the crude extract of the steroids have been made as a new drug (Xinnaoshutong). There have some products of Tribulus terrestris L. which have been used in clinic and the research in India and Pre-USSR.Further studies on the constituents of Tribulus terrestris L. started from the sixties of the last century. Many researchs have been done by the scientists of the India and the Pre-USSR. It is reported some steroids, flavouids alkaloids, amino acids, polysaccharides, fatty acids and terpenes, etc.The dried fruids(lSKg) of Tribulus terrestris were extracted with 80% EtOH three times at 85癈. After concentration in vacuo, the EtOH extract(500g) was dissolved in water, and the solution was extracted successively with CHCb and EtOAc. The CHCIs layer was coned, to dryness and subjected to silica gel CC eluting with petroleum ether/EtOAc to yield ten compounds(T-l-T-lO). The EtOAc layer was coned, to dryness and subjected to silica gel CC eluting with CHC13 /CH3OH to yield eight compounds(T-l l-T-18).The chemical structure of eight compounds (T-l-T-4, T-ll-T-14) of them was identified on the basis of chemical and spectral analysis (IR, MS, 'H-NMR, I3C-NMR) as:T-l: p-sitosterolT-2: dancosterol T-3: emodinT-4: physcion T-l 1: terrestriamide T-12: N-frYWs-feruloyltylramine T-13: N-/nmy-caffeoyltylramine T-l4: Kaempferol Among them, T-3, T-4, T-13 are first found from the plant.
