Objective Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is very common in vascular surgery. DVT not only causes life threatening pulmonary embolism, but also post-thrombotic syndrome. The thrombus was removed by Fogarty balloon catheter is one of the common used treatment methods. Although it is recognized that more early removal of vein thrombus may make better therapeutic consequence, the best period for thrombectomy is still disputed. Therefore, the present study tries to clear the different influence of removal thrombus by Fogarty balloon catheter on venous wall in different times, providing basis for choosing the best time of thrombectomy.Methods In the base of inferior vena caval thrombosis induced in rats, the pathological changes of thrombus and venous wall and the injury of Fogarty balloon catheter to venous walls were observed in different times in addition to quantitating the thrombus residue in venous wall afterthrombectomy. Results1. The request of our research can be reached through the induced rat model of the inferior vena caval thrombosis.2. Endothelial cells were injured in form of degeneration and necrosis. Inflammatory cells will infiltrate the inferior vena caval wall after the thrombus being induced and the quantities of inflammatory cells reach the summit in 3-5 days. The numbers of the inflammatory cells are significantly different from controls (P<0.05). Collagen deposits in adventitia of venous wall with time passing. The quantities of collagen reach the summit after thrombus being induced 10 days, which are significantly different from controls (P<0.05).3. After thrombus was removed by Fogarty balloon catheter in different time, the numbers of endothelial denudation and the depth of injured venous wall are significantly different (P<0.05) between the time before and after thrombus organization.4. The trend of quantity of thrombus residue is increase when time passing after thrombus was removed by Fogarty balloon catheter in different times, which are significantly different (P<0.05) between the time before and after thrombus organization.Conclusions1. Inflammation and increased collagen deposited in adventitia of venous wall will happen after thrombosis being induced. Constitution of venous wall changed.2. The injury in venous wall performed by thrombectomy is significant different between time before and after thrombus organization. The injury of Fogarty balloon catheter to venous wall would be serious after venous thrombus is organized.3. After thrombectomy the quantity of thrombus residue is significantly different between time before and after thrombus organization. The quantity of thrombus residue is increase after vein thrombus is organized.Considered the factors of above, the best period of thrombectomy through Fogarty balloon catheter is before constitution of venous wall changing and the vein thrombosis organizing.
