Objective: To investigate the role of electroglottography (EGG) on diagnosis, therapeutic effects evaluation of laryngeal diseases and on voice research. Methods: The study consists of three parts: (1) 300 cases with laryngeal diseases, included vocal fold polyps in 100, vocal fold nodules in 80, vocal fold neoplasm in 50, vocal fold paralysis in 40, vocal fold spot in 30; received electroglottography examination. EGG parameters and waveforms were recorded and compared with those of 100 health subjects so as to decide the diagnostic value of EGG on laryngopathy; (2) 20 cases with falsetto were subjected to EGG testing before and after thyroplasty operation. The pre-and postoperative parameters were analyzed to make sure whether if EGG testing could be applied for evaluating the therapeutic effect of operation; (3) 120 health subjects in different gender and age were measured by electroglottography metry as phonating in different audio-frequency in chest register. The characters of EGG parameters in different physiologicconditions were outlined preliminarily to illustrate the role EGG on voice research. The differences of value among groups were analyzed statistically by using t-test. Results: (1) In groups of vocal fold polyps, vocal fold nodules, vocal fold neoplasm, vocal fold paralysis, vocal fold spot and health subjects, the value of contact quotient(CQ) were 56.78±6.93 ,51.26±6.08,48.56±5.32,50.65±6.38,52.59±6.48 and 55.46±6.28% respectively; the level of fundamental frequency(Fo) were 224.12±24.35,212.03±23.54,245.23±8.74,191.57±21.63,187.98±10.03 and 260.00±25.62Hz separately. For both CQ and Fo parameters, the differences between each group were statistically significant (p<0.05). The waveforms in groups mentioned above were characteristically different from each other. (2) The values of Fo, CQ, open quotient, closed quotient, Jitter and Shimmer in the cases with falsetto were 216.73±25.12Hz,57.82±6.21%,65.87±6.49%,34.32±6.13%,0.22±0.09% and 1.78 ±0.83% respectively before thyroplasty operation, while 162.43 ±20.12Hz,52.02±5.32%,73.82±5.80%,25.34±5.01%,0.37±0.10 %and 2.83±0.67% respectively after surgery. Statistical differences between the two sets of EGG data to evaluate the significance of parameters changed(p<0.05). (3) With phonating frequency rising, the values of CQ increased gradually in all of the voice research groups regardless of age and gender. Concerning age and gender, there was significant difference in value of CQ between the aged and the young, also between the males and the females (p<0.05). Conclusion:(1) Typically difference from each other in several laryngeal diseases in EGG parameters and waveforms suggested that EGG examination may play an important role on diagnosis and differential diagnosis of laryngopathy. (2) The significant difference of EGG parameters between pre-operation and post-operation revealed that thyroplasty may be effective, but also might cause the complication of incomplete glottis closure and hoarseness in the cases with falsetto. This showed EGG may have a role on evaluation of operation in clinical.(3) The EGG parameters varied evidently from age, gender and phonating frequency in chest register, this indicated that EGG testing may be useful to physiological voice research.
