Objective: To study the relationship of MR imaging manifestion of the local tomour invasion of the naspharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) ,with the expression of P53 protein, in order to providing guidance for clinic staging, therapy and prognosis of NPC.Methods and Materials: 104 p atients with N PC w hose M R i maging was performed before treatment, were enrolled in this study. The expression of P53 protein was examed by S-P immunohistochemical technique, A comprarsion of the MRI with the P53 expression was performed. Results: 1. MR imaging manifestion : patients was staged into Tl(n=32) T2(n=32) T3(n=20) T4(n=20). Among them, there were 59 cases with the parapharyngeal space (PPS) involvement which were divided into type I (n=19) typeE (n=19) typeIII(n=21) ; 42 cases with carotid spaces involvement; 49 cases with ervical lymph nodes metastasis, and 34 cases with retropharyngeal nodes involvement.2. The relationship of MRI manifestion with the expression of p53 :(1) the expression rate of P53 protein in NPC was 83%, (2) the expression of P53 was statistical significance difference among T- staging, P<0.05 (3) the expression rate of P53 protein in patients with the PPS involvement was 83%, without the PPS involvement was 82%, thedifference was no statistical significance, p>0.05; and there was no statistical significance among the expression rate of P53 protein in the type of PPS involvement 1(78%), 0(80%), 111(90%), though the rate increasing gradually( p>0.05); (4) the expression rate of P53 protein in patients with carotid spaces involvement was 93%, and without carotid spaces involvement was 76%, the difference was statistical significance, p < 0.05. (5) there was no correlation between the expression of P53 protein and the cervical lymph nodes metastasis the retropharyngeal nodes metastasis. Conclusion : (1) the expression of P53 is probably one of impotant etiologic facts ;(2) with the T-stage increasing ,the expression of p53 protein became stronger ; (2) there was no significance correlation between the expression of p53 protein and the PPS involvement ;(3) the expression of p53 protein was relation with the carotid spaces involvement, (4)there was no correlation between lymph nodes metastasis and the expression of P53 protein ;...
