Objective: To study the expression of latent membrane protein 1 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissue and vascular endothelial growth factor in tissue and serum, we studied the relationship between the expression of LMP1 and VEGF protein in NPC tissues with clincl statement of NPC, radiosensitivity of tumor, survival rate of patients, relapse and metastasis of carcinoma as well as the relationship between LMP1 with VEGF. The objective is to provide the objective index in judging the malignant degree and biological behavier of NPC.Methods: The expression of LMP1 and VEGF protein of 40 NPC patients' biopsy specimen were examined by immunohi- stochemistory SP staining before radiotherapy. We choose 10 patients with chronic nasopharyn- gitis for contrast, meanwhile were detected by quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method in serum in 40 patients with NPC.These 40 patients were treated in 1999.1-2000.11,their pathological diagnosis were definite, complishing the whole radiotherapy and being revisited over 5 years, we studied the relationship between the expression of LMP1 and VEGF protein in NPC tissues with clincl statement of NPC, radiosensitivity of tumor, survival rate of patients, relapse and metastasis of carcinoma as well as the relationship between LMP1 with VEGF.Results: The positive rate of LMP1 and VEGF was 72.5% and 60.0% respectively, the average level in serum was 466.45ng/L. The clinical staging, poor sensitivity of radiotherapy, metastatic potential of lymph nodes, distance metastasis, survival rate were correlated with high level expression of LMP1 protein. The clinical staging and metastatic potential of lymph nodes, poor sensitivity of radiotherapy, ralapse, distance metastasis, survival rate were correlated with high level expression of VEGF protein. The expression of VEGF protein in tissue was positively correlated with the expression of VEGF protein in serum(r=0.809, P<0.05). The expression of LMP1 protein was positively correlated with the expression of VEGF protein (r=0.812, P<0.05). Multiplicity indicated the expression of LMP1 and VEGF protein in the NPC tissue for NPC distance metastasis were both independent effect factor. Conclusion: The high level expression of LMP1 and VEGF protein may be associated with the development and poor prognosis of NPC.
