ObjectiverWe sought to determin whether the maternal serum levels of leptin and interleukin 1β(IL-1β)are higher in mild severe preeclamptic woman than in matched normal controle subjects in the third trimester , then to explore the correlation of leptin and IL-1β, and they maybe have potential effects in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia(PE). We also research if the cord serum leptin levels are different in three groups and their relations with the maternal serum leptin fetal weight. Methods:The maternal serum leptin IL-13 and cord leptin were measured by immunoradiometric assay and radioimmunoassay in 35 preeclamptic woman(15 mild and 20 sever) and 35 normal pregnant women, matched for maternal age prepregnancy body mass index and gestational age at sampling. Results:The leptin concentrations were significantly higer(p<0.01) in women with PE than in normal pregnant women(25. 28 +1.98ng/ml).The serum leptin levels in the sever PE group(42. 19+ 2. 2ng/ml) were elevated significantly(p<0. 01) compared with mild PEgroup (34. 79+2. 08ng/ml). The maternal IL-1 and cord leptin were not different significantly in three groups:0. 11+0. 04 and 9.57 + 1.69 ng/ml (normal), 0. 13+0. 03 and 8. 89+1. 62ng/ml (mild PE) 0. 13+0. 04 and 9.14+1.61 ng/ml (severe PE), respectively. Matermal leptin and IL-1 P -v maternal and cord leptin did not correlated significantly, cord leptin correlated significantly with birth weight :r=0. 655 (normal), r=0. 583(mild PE), r=0.547(severe PE).Conclusion:The leptin levels in PE are higer than in normal pregnancy, and related to the severity of PE. The leptin may play a role in the pathogenesis of PE and it didn' t relate to IL-1 fl .Maternal and cord leptin have no correlations, cord leptin correlated significantly with birth weight.
