Background and Objective: The incidence of central nervous system infection islower than that of other organs or systems because there is the blood-brain barrier and blood cerebrospinal fluid barrier in central nervous system. The clinical situation is critical if the central nervous system is infected. And the fatality and themutilation rate are high. In order to investigate the clinical characteristics, the positive rate and specificity of examination, and define the clinical diagnostic criteria of early stage of various kinds of central nervous system infectious diseases, the clinical data of 247 cases in 22 years were studied retrospectively. Materials and Methods: Records of 247(male 191, female 56) hospitalized patients of intracranial infectious diseases from May, 1979 to June, 2000 were reviewed. There were 72 cases of viral meningitis, 67 cases of tuberculous meningitis, 13 cases of purulent meningitis, 6 cases of fungal meningitis, 58 cases of viral encephalitis, 11 cases of herpes simplex virus encephalitis and 20 cases of brain abscess. The clinical materials included the general material, history, pattern of onset clinical manifestations, CSF results, image change and pathological findings. The data were analyzed with variance test.-6-respir8tory tract infection; for puru1ent meningitis and brain abscess,15$had otitis media history and 12% had a recent oper8tion history;52% of tubercu1ous meningitis had 8 formr history of extracrania1 TB;3 cases of herpes siIIlP1ex virus encePha1itis had periora1 herpes history;3 cases of fullga1 meningitis had TB history, areng which 2 cases hada 1ong term history of steroids administr8tion.The onset of Perulent meningitis, vira1 areningitis and vira1enc6Phalitis were chiefly acute, and the onset of fUng1 meningitis, brain abscess and tubercu1ous meningitis were PYominently chronic.Headache wns most severe in Pnyu1ent and fung81 meningitis. EPi1epsy,psychiatric spotoms and disturbance of consciousness 'ere mostconnnon1y seen in herpes simp1ex virus encePh81itis. And vision decreasewas most camnly seen in funga1 meningitis.
