Cancer is a commnion serious disease. Cancer is the second common cause of death among populations and its mortality is the highest. Chemotherapy is one of the major treatments of cancer, but its toxic reactions decrease clinical effects. Chinese traditional medicine suggests that the toxic reactions of chemotherapy are due to the toxicity of drugs as well as faint Zhenqi of the body. Many studies have suggested that Chinese traditional herbs that have the effccts of Fuzeng Peibeng can decrease the toxic reactions of chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE: The study is to observe the effect of decreasing toxicity of chemotherapy for mice bearing with tumors and investigate its mechanism, which can supply experiment basement for clinical application of Yangwei mixture on decreasing the toxic reactions of chemotherapy in patients with cancers. METHODS: S0 sarcoma cells were inoculated and cultured in abdomen. Ascities were obtained with sterilization after 10 days. The concentration of cancer cells in ascities was adjusted to 1.75 X I 06/mL. 0.2 Ml cancer cells suspensions were subcutaneously inoculated in internal lateral of right ears of 40 C57BL mice. After 24 hours, the 40 mice bearing with tumors were weighted, named after numbers and randomly divided into 5 groups(group B were not treated with any drugs, group C were treated with CTX only, group D were treated with CTX and low dosage of Yangwei mixture, group E were treated with CTX and high dosage of Yangwei mixture, group F were treated with CIX and Zhenqi). In addition, group A consist of 8 C57BL mice that had not been inoculated cancer cells suspensions and treated with any drugs were included in this study. Mice of each group were treated by schedule respectively for 14 days. During the experiment, general condition of mice were observed. Mice were killed 24 hours after stopping medication. Weight of mice, volume of xenografls were measured. Blood samples were obtained to be tested blood routine and the function of heart, liver and kidney. The bone marrow of left os femoris were obtained to be measured bone marrow nuclear cell counts. The spleens of mice were obtained for testing spleen lymphocyte transformation rate by MTT assay in vitro. RESULTSZ As regard to color of hair, amount of intake and activity of mice, group D and group E were better than group C. The volume of xenogfats of group C, group D and group E were less than those of group A and group B. There were no significant differences among group C, group D and group E in the volume of xenogfats, but weights of mice of group D and group E were significantly more than those of group C. As regard to peripheral blood counts, the erythrocyte counts and haemoglobulin of group B, group C, group D, group E,and group F were less than those of group A, but the leukocyte counts were more. There were no significant differences among group B, group C, group D, group E,and group F peripheral blood counts. The bone marrow nuclear counts of group D and group E were more than those of group C. The value of serum ALT of group D and group E were lower than those of group C. The spleen lymphocyte transformation rate of group D and group E were more than those of group C. CONCLUSIONS: Yangwei mixture can improve general condition, promot prolification of bone marrow cell, alleviate damage in liver function, increase spleen lymphocyte transformation rate and improve immunity of mice treated with chemotherapeutic drug. The mechanism of decreasing toxic reacti...
