Background: The excessive synthesis and releasing of endothelin(ET), Angiotensin II (A IL )and the imbalance of TXA2-PGI2 have been implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Objectives: To investigate the changes of ET, A 11 and the disorder of TXA2-PGI2 balance in patients with essential hypertension (EH).To discuss the relationship between syndrome differentiation of TCM to determinate treatment and ET, A II, TXA2-PGI2 in patients with EH. Subjects and methods: 120 patients (68 male and 52 female) with EH2,(aged 40-80 years),were observed. Through the TCM Differentiation, the 120 patients include 19 with the type of the flaming-up of Liver-fire, 31 with the type of the retention of phlegm-dampness,56 with the type of deficiency of Yin and hyperactivity of Yang, 14 with the type of deficiency of both Yin and Yang. On the other hand, of the 120 patients, 79 cases were blood stasis syndrome, 41 cases were non-blood stasis syndrome. 30 healthy people (18 male and 12 female) aged 40-75 years, were taken as the normal control group. 120 patients with EH2 were divided randomly into treated group and control group further, 80 patients in treated group were treated with Tetrametuyl pyrazine plus norvasc and 40 patients in control group were treated with Norvasc alone. To determine the plasma ET, A 11 ,TXB2,&KPGF1a by RIA method. Results: 1.The level of ET, A 11 ,TXB2 and ratio of TXB2/&KPGF1a were significantly increased (pO.05) in the group of blood stasis syndrome compared with non-blood stasis syndrome. 3. The level of ET in the group of the flaming-up of Liver-fire was significantly higher than in the groups of the retention of phlegm-dampness, the deficiency of Yin and hyperactivity of Yang and the deficiency of both Yin and Yang (pO.O5) 5.The level of &KPGF1a in the groups of the deficiency of both Yin and Yang and the deficiency of Yin and hyperactivity of Yang was significantly lower than in the excess syndrome groups and the normal control group (p
