Rice is one of the most important food crops in the world. Recently with the increase of temperature, the problem of water shortage could become more and more serious in China. Drought has become the major abiotic stress in rice production, seriously affecting rice yield and quality. Thus improving drought resistance in rice has become the key problem to need agricultural scientists to solve. By researches of rice OsWAX2-2 pure mutant,OsWAX2-1 and OsWAX2-2 transgenic rice plants, the genes function of OsWAX2-1 and OsWAX2-2 in plant stress resistance were analyzed in this study.Cuticular wax-covered cuticle is one of the most important barriers for all terrestrial plants to adapt their above ground tissues to a drying atmosphere as well as other biotic and abiotic stresses. The cuticular wax layer can also protect plant from ultraviolet radiation, and resist the invasion of bacteria.Over-expression OsWAX2-1 and OsWAX2-2,RNAi OsWAX2-1 and OsWAX2-2 transgenic plants and rice OsWAX2-2 pure mutant were obtained for the functional characterization of these two genes. Over-expression OsWAX2-1 and OsWAX2-2 genes caused plant dwarf. By withholding water and rehydration tests, we found the drought resistance of OsWAX2-1 over-expression in rice plant was stronger than OsWAX2-1RNAi plant and Nipponbare; The results of withholding water treatment showed that drought resistance was significantly reduced in rice OsWAX2-2 pure mutant, which suggesting OsWAX2-1 and OsWAX2-2 may be related to plant drought resistance and play a very important role in responses to stresses.
