The growth and development of water stress in three line peppers were studied, which are line pepper No.2, line pepper No.6 and line pepper L14 under controlling soil relative water content. Some mainly physiological indices were measured in different soil relative water content in order to supply some theism about anti-drought breeding. Five levels of controlling soil relative water content were set up: CK 80-90%, T1 70-80%, T2 60-70%, T3 50-60%, T4 40-50%. The main result is followings:1. The growth of plant length, stem diameter, leaf area was affected significantly, so water stress can limit the development of line pepper.2. With the decrease of soil relative content in three line peppers, the contents of chlorophyll in the line pepper leaves appeared an obvious declining trend with different degrees for three species. Among those decline amounts, line pepper No.2 is lower than line pepper No.6 and line pepper L14.3. The content of MDA is increasing when soil relative water content is decreasing. The increasing amounts of line pepper No.2 is more than line pepper No.6 and line pepper L14.But different species in different treatments have different degrees. The changing of line pepper L14 is most, and of line pepper No.2 is least.4. Line pepper can accumulate more soluble sugar and praline in order to increase ability of osmotic adjustment to anti-water stress. The experiment is showed: variation of soluble sugar and praline content in line pepper L14 is more than line pepper No.2 and line pepper No.6, soluble sugar and praline can resist in water stress.5. With the decrease of soil relative water content, the trend of three line peppers are that POD activity and CAT activity are increasing and SOD activity is decreasing. SOD activity of line pepper No.6 and line pepper L14 under T2 is more than that under T1, it shows they can adjust SOD activity to resist in water stress which is not higher. The ability of removing active oxygen of line pepper No.6 and line pepper L14 is higher than it of line pepper No.2. When water stress is higher, CAT activity of line pepper No.2 and line pepper No.6 is increasing, but that of T4 is lower than T3.It showsT4 can affect line pepper strongly. POD activity of three line pepper is increasing when the degree of water stress is stronger gradually.6. The quality of line pepper is affected by water stress. With the decrease of soil relative content, it can causes falling, drop, deciduous of line pepper.
