It was well-known that different indoor ornamental plants had their different abilities of formaldehyde purification.But why? Less research was reported.To find out the reasons,21 species of six kinds of typical-leaf ornamental plants were chosen as the samples,and the relationships between the abilities of formaldehyde purification and plant morphological,anatomical and gas exchange characteristics were studied in this thesis.The results showed as follows.1.Formaldehyde purification abilities were related with the leaf types of ornamental plants: succulents and the plants with lanceolate coriaceous leaves were poor in purifying formaldehyde whereas the other typical-leaf ornamental plants tested were much better in this way,especially, Chlorophytum comosum,which had the strongest ability of formaldehyde purification.2.Formaldehyde purification abilities were very significantly associated with stomatal density,but not significantly associated with stomatal aperture,conductance,specific area and transpiration rate.3.There were great differences in leaf structures for different ornamental plants and the leaves with loose porous structures were helpful to purify the formaldehyde.4.Photosynthetic rate of leaves were very significantly associated with formaldehyde purification abilities.The plants with higher photosynthetic rate were much stronger in purifying abilities than those with lower photosynthetic rate.But there was no significant association between respiration rates and purification abilities.5.The correlations of formaldehyde purification abilities with net photosynthetic rates of plants were much closer than with its stomatal density,which was an important restrictive factor,however.
