Study On CIP-related Potato Variety's Application In Yunnan Province

This paper analyzes the current situation of the world potato industry and the Chinese potato industry from five respects such as the area, gross output, per unit area yield, consumption, and trade; it summarizes the development trend of the world potato industry; points out the advantage and potentiality of the development of Chinese potato industry; puts forward three contradictions existing in the industry development, i.e. the contradiction between large gross output of raw material and severe short supply of processing-oriented varieties, the contradiction between high potentiality in new variety output and low large-area output level, the contradiction between rapid development of fast food industry and slow growth in processing industry. It is on this basis that this paper has made empirical research to the potato industry of Yunnan province. Since the beginning of the Ninth Five-Year Plan period, the potato output and gross output value of the potato industry in Yunnan province have been improved a lot, and the development of the potato industry has contributed much to the increase of the income of local farmers. However, Yunnan's potato industry still lags far behind some Chinese developed provinces and regions, and some foreign countries (such as Britain, Holland), in terms of average per unit area yield. This paper has introduced the current situation of Yunnan's potato industry from four aspects: First, potato cultivation history in Yunnan; Second, analyzes actual conditions of Yunnan's potato industry from eight aspects: cultivated area, output over the years, production area, production base, variety selection, improved variety breeding system, processing industry and out-of-season production, etc.; Third, the advantage and characteristic of developing the potato industry; Fourth, existing problems. Through the analysis, finding out and giving play to the advantages and characteristic of the development of Yunnan's potato industry, and detecting and eliminating the barriers against potato industry development, will help enhance both per unit area yield and total potato output, thus promote the development of potato processing industry, and fully improve the competitiveness of the potato industry in Yunnan province. As for the participation of International Potato Center in the popularization and demonstration of selected new variety "Cooperation-88" and other varieties, this paper makes empirical analysis by introducing the case study method, calculates its marginal profit, and offers quantitative support for new variety introduction in order to gain high economic benefit. The adoption of "Cooperation-88" is one of the reasons for Yunnan's potato processing enterprises to develop rapidly, and the variety is matured for potato processing industry. So, this paper tries to take this variety as an example and probes into how to establish a complete industry value chain, and offers a feasible development model for potato industry in Yunnan.This research adopts the methods of combining empirical analysis with normative analysis, and combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis, and carries out detailed analysis of current situation of potato industry in the world, China and Yunnan province respectively, and on this basis, summarizes five major advantages for Yunnan province to develop the potato industry, explores four major problems existing in development of Yunnan's potato industry. This paper makes empirical analysis of the industry development course of "Cooperation-88". Finally, it proposes to strengthen the popularization of special-purpose variety, improve the production system of detoxicated potato seed, accelerate the cultivation of technological personnel and the establishment of industrialization management system, strengthen the implementation of the policy of opening to the outside world, and offer strong policy support.
