The Study On Prevention And Control Of Goat Pox In Guangxi

Goat pox, caused by goat pox virus (GPV), is an important infectious diseasemanifesting with fever, skin damnification of the whole body, exanthema variolosum andlymphadenopathy and so on. in Chian, Goat pox broke out in many province and had beenharming greatly the development of goat industry. This disease is classified as category A ofanimal infectious disease by OIE, and Chinese Agricultural Ministry classifies it ascategory I of animal epidemic disease by 96th document.Since the goat pox had never happened in Guangxi Province before, local peoplelacked the knowledge about control and prevention of this disease. In 2003, a kind of acuteinfectious disease, which manifesting papula of skin and graphic mucosa, broke out amongthe goats in some county of Guangxi. It spread among goats only, other livestock andpoultry will not be infected. The infection rate of this disease nearly reached 100% and thedeath rate is above 40～90%. Through various experiments on typical cases, such as theisolation and cultivation of pathogen, electron microscope observation and animal infectiontest, it was finally proved that this goat disease happened in Guangxi Province was goatpox.At the same time of diagnosing the goat disease, we took the epidemiologicalinvestigation on goat pox disease and analyzed the trend by using the measuring andbroadcasting system of epidemic situation. With the unified action launched by the localgovernment, we adopted a series of comprehensive measure taking prevention as the majorpoint. Finally, the epidemic situation was controlled effectively.The GPV attenuated vaccine we use now is our own research result after liberation. It ismainly used in Northern provinces where animal husbandry is blooming, and has beenproved to be safe and effective on the goat through several years' practice. However, asattenuated live vaccine of goat pox needs intradermal injection at the tail head of goat, itbrings great difficulty to the primary field epidemiological workers. Moreover, pregnantgoats are easy to miscarry after injection. Consequently, it is necessary to take more research for improvement of goat pox vaccine since the attenuated vaccine has some certainside effects to southern goats which make it hard to popularize. Cooperated with the InnerMongolia biomedical factory, we have done the immune protection experiment on theinactivated vaccine made by this factory, and already acquired great achievements.
