In this study, insecticidal and antimicrobial activity of different extracts from the seeds and pericarp of Pittosporum tobira were studied, the result indacated the chloroform extract of seeds had the best bioactivity. While the chemical constituentes of the chloroform extract from the seeds of Pittosporum tobira were isolated and purified with bioactivity-traced method , the main results are as follows:The chemical constituents of seeds and pericarp of Pittosporum tobira have been tested systematically by means of tube-test. It founded seeds and pericarp of Pittosporum tobira both contained phenols, tannins, saccharides, saponins, phytosterols and terpeniods, flavoniods, lactones, proteins, volatile iols, fat and some other chemical constituents, but no anthraquinones. The seeds contained alkaloid, but the pericarp didn't have.Growth rate method and filter paper method were adopted to test the antimicrobial activity against seven phytopathogenic fungi (Macrophoma kawatsukai, Gibberella cintrea, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Cubense, F.oxysporium f.sp niveum, Alternaria longipes, Fusarium oxysporum) and two bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli). The result showed different inhibitory effects to fungi and almost no significant inhibitory effects to bacteria, the chloroform extract of seeds showed the best inhibitory effect to fungi, and the best inhibitory rate was 100% with the dosage of 1 mg/mL.Stomach, contact action of different extracts to 3rd larvae of Mythimna separata was investigated. The result showed chloroform and petroleum ether extracts from seeds and pericarp of Pittosporum tobira all had stomach and contact activity; n-butanol extracts of seeds and pericarp all showed no any activity to test insect; the chloroform extracts of seeds showed the highest stomach activity(70%) and higher contact activity(27.59%).Four compounds were isolated from the seeds of Pittosporum tobira by means of solvent extraction, column chromatograghy, TLC, recrystallization and other means. Their chemical structures identified asβ-sitosterol(Ⅰ), lupeol (Ⅲ), and oleanolic acid(Ⅳ), by the physicochemical property and spectral means(1H-NMR,13C-NMR,IR).
