Chongqing has a long history of planting citrus because its natural resource and ecological condition is most suitable to plant citrus in China, even the world. In recent years, the citrus production has been developing quickly, but it is insufficient in production level, variety structure and fruit quality, which have direct relations with unreasonable production management and production layout. On one hand, the resistance natural disaster ability of citrus is weak because the farmers lack the scientific knowledge and the correct guidance. On the other hand, the production of citrus is unsatisfactory for lacking master plan and reasonable layout in macro. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a new method to promote the citrus orchard reasonable layout and the scientific management.With the development of the citrus industry information, it is a tendency to apply 3S technology, database technology, distributed computer technology to explore the citrus orchard reasonable layout and the scientific management. Taking Chongqing as a study area, this research collected the citrus production management information. According to principle from macro to micro, the study area was divided into city, county, town and orchard four levels. In order to realize the citrus production reasonable layout and scientific management, a citrus orchard management system was established based on ArcGIS Engine. The main contents and achievements are listed as follows:(1) System design. The synthesis method was adopted replying on the design goal and principle. Chongqing citrus orchard management system consisted of four various subsystems, i.e. city, county, town and orchard. Subsystem of city and county included data update, display, theme charting, knowledge base and user management. Town subsystem provided data display and theme charting. Orchard level included data display, theme charting, orchard three-dimensional simulation,multimedia display and nutrition diagnoses expert consultation function.(2) Database design and establishment.â‘ Spatial database. This research brought forward a new method to organize relative data of the Citrus' planting and layout based on four classes of regionalism, the scales of spatial data are 1:250000,1:100000,1:10000,1:2000, respectively. Parts of orchard used 1: 500. The base data included: basic information, terrain, atmospheric environment, landuse condition, soil resources, water resources as well as citrus orchard management related information.(2) Attribute database. This research divided the upper, middle and lower three kinds of production management to carry on the detail investigation to citrus orchard fertilization and water management, built investigation databases of 50 orchards in Jiangjin, Fengjie, Yongchuan, Wan Zhou, and Zhongxian and built attribute database, which is connected with the spatial data.(3) Database management. Citrus resources information is magnanimous data, the traditional way to store datum in document has not been able to meet the actual needs. Therefore, according to the design idea and principle, we classified the information by spatial data and attribution data, built data dictionary and entity relation models. Taking Geodatabase as data organization model, the standardized data input to ORACLE space database by using ArcSDE.(3) System realization. The citrus orchard management system was established based on VB and ArcGIS Engine, which realized the connection of attribute data and spatial data and four scales stratification demonstration subsystems. These subsystems could not only connect with each other but also be independence, which might satisfy the different stratification users. The system could provide services for all levels of governmental macroscopic decision-making, professional department technical guidance, fertilizer enterprise science production, and farmer scientific management.(4) Orchard three-dimensional simulation. Fifty orchards whose areas were large than 6.67 hm~2 three-dimensional simulations in Jiangjin, Zhong County, Fengjie, Wan Zhou and Yongchuan were achieved by geographic information system and three-dimensional simulation technology. Several orchards in Zhongxian were simulated with a scale of 1: 500 which could locate the precisely site of each fruit tree.(5) Citrus nutrition diagnoses expert consultation. The research implemented nutrition diagnoses knowledge base which was composed of 11 kinds of common citrus sickness to lack the element according to the certain rules, based on expert discussion, technical achievement, and production practice experience. Diagnosis results including symptom pictures, detailed descriptions, reasons, preventing and controlling methods, and video materials could be exhibited by adopting forward inference control strategy from the initial known fact, The function could provide service for fruit tree's precise management and fertilization.The establishment of Chongqing citrus orchard management system, on one hand, leads the citrus production management to be quantified and located, on the other hand, affords user-friendly interface. Meanwhile, to some extent, developing information system including commonly GIS functions by introducing ArcGIS Engine could save software development cost for citrus resource management department.
