Based on the data collected from Yongshuntai Malt Group Co. Ltd. on thevarious kinds of beer barley purchased in different months of 2005, the qualitydifference between the domestically produced malting barley and the imported maltingbarley and the difference among different domestic barleys and different importedbarleys was analyzed respectively. The supply quantity of different barleys was alsocompared. The results are summarized as follow:With the improving living standards and consumption habits, the beer consumptionhas been continually increasing in our country, which greatly facilitates the rapiddevelopment of our beer malt industry. However, about 50% of the malting barleysupply, used as the raw material for beer production, depends on the import from othercountries, which doesn't match our beer industry development and constitutes muchpotential risk in the raw material for beer making.Yongshuntai Malt Group Co. Ltd., one of the leading enterprises in agriculturalindustry both in Yangzhou City and in Jiangsu Provice, specializes in beer malt. It isalso the largest domestic manufacturer employing German Siman barely productiontechnology, famous for its product of "Shuangfei"malt, which wins the Title of"Famous Band Product"honored by Jiangsu Province and the Title of Green Foodrecognized by National Green Food Developing Center. This company is one of themain consumers of domestically grown barley, having a higher consumption proportionof domestic barley than other domestic malt production companies.There is a widespread problem of high impurity with the imported barley, and thebarley quality varies a lot among those imported from different countries. For instance,Australian barely is relatively small in terms of weight per thousand grains while Canadian barley has relatively higher protein content and French barley has slightlyhigh torn rate. Yongshuntai Malt Group mainly imports from Australia, with Frenchbarely and Canadian barely import as a supplement, which largely depends on differentproduction habits.Domestic barley almost reaches the national standards (GB) for malting barley,except that its protein content is relatively high and the malting rate is slightly low. Ineffect, the quality of different barley supply varies a lot form one another. For instance,Farm meets the beer barley standards and indexes except its slightly high proteincontent; Xibai barley costs higher and is therefore priced higher than others; whileJiangsu barley is widely with such weak points as high protein content, low weight perthousand grains and poor purity rate.Jiangsu, the largest barley production center in our country, has many advantagesin ecological condition, research level, beer production and etc. Beer barley has beenranked among the 17 superiority agricultural produces. Therefore, the furtherdevelopment of barley production will not only solve the problem of our barely supplyfor making beer but also help adjust our agricultural structure.Based on the investigation and data analysis, the following measures are to be takento ensure barley production.Further efforts should be spent inâ…°) breeding, selecting, and developing new barleybreeds;â…±)improving inspection system and implementing "Better Quality, HigherPrice" system and the uniform cultivating technology;â…²) improving suchafter-production treatment as barn storing, drying and processing conditions;â…³) makingfull use of the functions of Barley Production Trade Association in standardizing qualitycriteria and pricing, on guard against monopoly of purchase and marketing, so as toachieve the most reasonable profit distribution and mutual benefits among beer industry,malt industry an barley production; andâ…´) publicizing domestic barley and improvingdomestic barley band, quality as well as credibility.
