This paper reports the result of cultivation of somatic cells from Porphyra haitanensis, one of the most important economical seaweeds cultivated in South Coastal of China, was selected as the important material in research. The isolated nori cells or protoplasts can be cultivated into thalli for the totipotency of plant. The result of experiments shows that the isolated nori cells can survive, divide and regenerate well on solid agarose seawater medium. The division and regeneration of nori cells on solid medium is much the same as that in liquid medium in certain extent. The isolated nori cells can divide and regenerate to form into normal thalli, abnormal thalli (with or without holdfast), conchocelis and more cell-groups. On solid medium, regenerated thalli can slowly and continuously grow, and concelis can normally grow and maturate through culture. Also, parts of cell-groups can develop into callus-like clumps. Then the clumps could differentiate into young plantlets in the optimum growth temperature. The author observed that few cells can directly sprout into comchosporangial branch and carpogonia on the mature leafy thallus could discharge and germinate into carpospores in the same way as monospore did. It had also been demonstrated that the growth and development of isolated nori somatic cells in different aged individual thalli were quite different in certain respects.
