Objective:To observe and compare the differences between the acupuncture treatment guided by Dr. Wang Ju-yi’s Applied Channel Theory and traditional acupuncture treatment based on syndrome differentiation with acupoints modification in treating stroke-sequel patients. Methods:Recruit 148 stroke-sequel patients from Hu Guo Si Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, based on the diagnostic standards of Evaluation Standards of Diagnosis and Therapeutic Effect of Stroke. Afterwards randomly divide them into treatment group and control group according to the random numbers produced by SPSS 17.0 software. For the treatment group, conduct acupuncture treatment based on Dr.Wang Ju-yi’s Channel Palpation, while for the control group, give treatment according to the textbook Acupuncture Treatment published by China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupoints modification based on different syndrome differentiations. Hereby evaluate the therapeutic effect of each group by means of scales including Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment (FMA), National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and Stroke-Specific Quality of Life scale (SS-QOL). Additionally, record the state of abnormal channels with self-made Channel State Form. Each group receives 5 times of treatments for 6 weeks with 12-week follow-up. Clinical evaluation is conducted respectively after 6 weeks of treatments and 12 weeks of follow-ups.Results:This research has recruited 148 stroke-sequel patients, and 136 of them have participated in the whole process of research.1. Main indicators of therapeutic effect1.1 Comparison within groups(1) Treatment group FMA score, Fugl-Meyer Balance Function, NIHSS and SS-QOL are all improved after treatment (P<0.05).(2) Control Group FMA score, Fugl-Meyer Balance Function, and SS-QOL are all improved after treatment (P>0.05); While there is no statistical difference for NIHSS after treatment (P>0.05)1.2. Comparison between groupsFor FMA movement score, Fugl-Meyer balance function and NIHSS, there is no statistic difference between two groups at the baseline period, after 6-week treatment and after 12-week follow-up (P>0.05); However, for SS-QOL, there is no statistic difference between two groups at the baseline period (P=0.575>0.05). And there is no statistic difference between the two after 6-week treatment (P=0.051>0.05), however, statistical difference starts to appear after 12-week (P=0.037<0.05).2. The statistics of abnormal channelsTreatment group is better at improving the statue of channels than control group; the abnormal channels of stroke-sequel patients mainly appear on stomach and kidney channels and the abnormalities are connected to traditional syndrome differentiation.Conclusions:1. Both Dr.Wang Ju-yi’s Applied Channel Theory and regular acupuncture treatment have apparent therapeutic effect on stroke-sequel patients.2. As for improving the nerve function and the quality of life, Dr.Wang Ju-yi’s Applied Channel Theory presents a better clinical result.3. Both Channel Palpation and regular acupuncture can improve the state of abnormal channels for stroke-sequel patients, while generally Channel Palpation shows an advantage in regulating abnormalities.
