Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) in the treatment of nonunion of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Methods We collected27patients suffered from nonunion of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, and treated them with PKP.Before and24hours and1month after surgery we measured the visual analogue scale (VAS),Oswesty disability index (ODI), and the height and Cobb angle of the vertebral bodies. Results All operations were completed successfully. The VAS and ODI were improved after the operation, there is no obvious changing in the one month follow-up visit. The mean height and Cobb angle of the vertebral bodies were improved after the operation, there is no obvious changing in the one month follow-up visit. Conclusion:Patients with these following clicinal characterics can be diagnosis as nonunion of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures:(1)long period back pain(more than6months),(2)the back pain can be aggracated when patients take any movements,(3)osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures can be diagnosised by radiograph,(4)appearance of intrevertebral vacuum clefts in MRI,and ruled out the acute fractures. PKP is an effective treatment for nonunion of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with less trauma and early recovery. What’more, the operative methed has the nerits of restory vertebral body height and quickly relieving pain.
