The heavy frigid region of Xing'anling Mountains is the dominant production area of Vaccinium uliginosum and Vaccinium vitisidaea in northeast forestry districts of China, where is rich in resources storage. These fruits are the small-sized berry resources demanding prompt development and with wide application.Until now, little research has been made on these small-sized berries such as V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea, and their populations are in an uncultivated state. The species are little and the indigenous species are degenerating seriously. The fruit quality is poor and many famous foreign species have not entered China's market. What we need is to strengthen the conservation of these small-sized berries, to improve the varieties, and especially to research and develop fresh fruit production of V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea. In the initial stage of research, on the basis of overall investigation, analysis and evaluation on V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea in the heavy frigid Xing'anling Mountains region, according to the local conditions of temperature, precipitation, humidity, vegetation, the biological, phyto-physiological, and ecological characters of V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea, as well as their germplasm resources, population succession, establishment of protected area and cultivation of elite strains, were studied. The main contents and key problems to be resolved in the research: (1) research on the physiological characters of V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea grown in Xing'anling region, the habitat difference with other plants, the environment benefiting their cultivation, and the measures of planning and germplasm conservation; (2) By the research on experiences of breeding, fast-propagating and cultivating of V. vitisidaea in USA, Japan, Australia and Russia as well as other provinces in China, to further study the stress resistibility and cultivation of V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea in heavy frigid regions; (3) to select and breed fine varieties, improve the fruit quality, cultivate sweet, big fruit varieties with strong stress resistibility, wide adaptability and late-flowering, early-mature.The methods of research: By collecting widely the trial data and references about V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea, based on the local conditions of ecology and vegetation types, the trial sites were selected and established, and based on typical trial model, a set of cultivation technique system of V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea was summed up. Applying the methods and principles suitable to local conditions, the fine varies with high economic value, strong resistibility and suiting marketing demand were developed. The final achievements of the research include: (1) establishment of cultivation technique system of V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea, and determination of methods and indexes; (2) by investigating the germplasm of V. uliginosum and V. vitisidaea, studying their biological characters and population succession patterns; (3) seeking for optimal seed propagation and cutting propagation methods and raising the survival rates of cultivation.
