On the basis of general databases in the Internet, we have set up the silkworm special molecular biology database by using filter programs compiled by perl language. Meanwhile, the databases of silkworm EST have also been established. Some primary applications of the databases have already been done, including NSES (nucleotide Sequences Extension System in silico), local BLAST alignment system based on web interface and protein structure prediction. These measurements would benefit for the foundation of bioinformatics platform of silkworm. The detail information is as follows:1. Many molecular biology databases of silkworm have already been founded. The important ones are EST database. The record of EST database is more than 120,000.2. Nucleotide Sequences Extension System in silico (NSES) has been established. It can effectively and promptly extend the cDNA sequence by using silkworm-special databases.3. The local BLAST alignment system based on Web has many excellent features. The style of retrieve, parameters selection and the pattern of results are the same as NCBI. This is easy to contrast with NCBI and communicate between researchers.4. Human reference database includes annotation database and protein structure motif database. These two databases are indispensable for comparative biology in silkworm; the protein motif information database would make the research of cDNA advanced.5. Bioinformatics' platform of silkworm can research genes and their associate features and simulate protein three-dimensional structure. The beautiful output images are easy for educational use and complicated research.
