Fleece production is the main performance of alpaca. The fleece is called as soft gold. In our farm the ratio of female alpacas to male alpacas was suitable. Because of great demand of energy during pregnancy, milk, self-consuming in winter, in addition of scarcity of fine pasture in spring, the production of alpaca fleece was affected during this period of fleece growth. In this study we were involved in the economic and practical methods for fleece growth increasing.1. study on alpaca fleece growth20 female and male alpacas at different ages were selected to measure the length of alpaca fleece every month. The variance of length in different month was analyzed. The result showed that age, sex and season affected alpaca fleece growth significantly.2. Effect of different level of melatonin injection on performance of alpaca fleece growthIn order to study how MTL affected alpaca fleece growth at the slowest period of fleece growth, 12 pregnant alpacas were injected melatonin(MLT) by 0mg, 50mg, 100mg, 150mg from Feb to May. The results showed mat MTL can make PRL in blood, PUN and Gret in plasm decreased significantly, and make GH in blood and TP increased, and make diameter and stretched length increased significantly. During the experiment the fleece growth rate in treated groups was increased significantly, but MTL had no effects on picking amount and net fleece. Above on, MTL played a great role in increasing alpaca fleece growth and 100mg was the best dosage.
