| The water grass generally refers to herbaceous plant growing in water. Ornamental water grass is a kind of ornamental-deserved water plant that can grow in natural environment or be manually gathered, cultured and selected one. It is mainly applied to the Aquarium to exhibit its natural and environmental beauty. There are many ornamental water grass varieties and more than 300 kinds among them are used in the Aquarium. Ornamental water grass is divided into five kinds as stem water grass, cluster-growing water grass, pepper grass, water banyan water grass and imperial crown grass.1. Water grass was summarized here and the development and function was discussed in the present studies.2. A preliminary investigation was taken on ornamental grass in Shanghai market. There are more than 100 kinds of water grass in Shanghai market, and the varieties show season -dependent. It was found that some trade names of water grass was confused, for example, many pepper grasses, water banyan and imperial crown grasses only have their genera name, and even the dealers can not tell its specific name exactly. Inaccurateness of many water plants make it disorder to acquaint, master and investigate. In order to getting corresponding trade name and botanical name plants, great deal of relevant materials were consulted and morphology characteristic of the water plants were compared with each other. So far, there are 31 kinds of water grass that have been confirmed, belongs to 22 different families respectively. However, some names are still difficult to confirm. Two reasons was researched, on the one hand there are little detailed materials on hand, on the other hand, the lack of flowers, fruits and seeds make it difficult to confirm. Therefore, more time should be taken to confirm all the ornamental water grasses.3. The construction and daily administration of aquarium was researched here. Three different size aquarium were selected in this experiment, that was large and medium-sized aquarium: 120 cm × 60 cm × 50 cm, miniature aquarium:35 cm × 30 cm × 13 cm and various kinds of palmtop jars: 15 cm × 15 cm × 5 cm. Each of these aquariums has their own characteristics, large and medium-sized aquarium has a relatively large capacity, at the same time, more kinds of grassed can planted and more contents can be showed. Miniature aquarium is small and convenient for administration. The palmtop jar has the characteristics of small volume, and it can be put on the desk to enjoy.4. At the same time, two extraventricular water grass pool were built, aimed at investigating the influence of water depth on the growth of grass, one was 30 cm wading pool, the other one was 45 cm deep pool. The result demonstrated that most of the water plants had a better growth in wading pool. The lower temperature and weak light density maybe the main reasons for this phenomenon. It is clearly found that the depth of water had a obvious effect on the growth of water plant. 15 kinds of water plants were successfully cultivated in the pools, and a good growing state was exhibited. Some water plants living in wading pool showed a especially good state, such as Bacopa carolinnan, Echinodorus palaefolius, Sagittaria graminea, and so on. Some degenerated water grasses cultivated in aquarium were transferred to the pools and resumed growth exhibited. Some of them even got more plantlets.5. In order to propagate water grass, some investigation was taken on the tissue culture of water grass. Green desmidian, red butterfly and water banyan were used as the materials. Several kinds of cultural methods were used for tissue culture, such as solid culture, liquid culture and upper-liquid solid culture. A success was gotten on the green desmidian group so far.6. Industrialization of ornamental water grasses was discussed here. There are a great development of ornamental grasses in Occident region.
