Canine pyrometra is one of common diseases in small animal clinic. The diagnosis and treatment of 96 canine pyometra cases were reported in the article. The clinical performance, histopathological changes, and the relationship between sex hormones, bacteria and canine pyrometra, as well as microscopic, ultramicroscopic changes in uterus and ovary were investigated systematically through using whole blood cell count, examination of biochemistry indexes such as various of enzymes, urea nitrogen, creatinine and so forth, radiography, radioimmunoassay (RIA) of serum progesterone and estrodiol, isolation and identification of bacteria from uterus fillings, histopathological observation of uteri and ovaries. This is significant in veterinary clinic practice, not only conducing to understand its nosopoietic regularities and pathogenesis but conducing to improve its therapeutic effects. The present study showed that the common clinical signs for 96 patients were dehydration, depression, anorexia, vaginal discharge, polydipsia, polyuria., nocturia, vomit and diarrhea and so forth. The mean PCV was 47 ?.5%. WBC was 27316.67 ?5856.08/uL, accompanied with nuclear shift to the left, indicating that the patients behaved severe inflammation. Blood biochemistry indexes indicated that ALT (40.91 4.16U/L), ALP (152.37 116.17U/L), GGT (10.65 3.89U/L), CRE (148.23 60.9mmol/L), TG (0.73 0.46mmol/L), and HDL (1.94 0.76g/L) were significantly different with normal values (P<0.05 or P<0.01), showing that most patients behaved nephric and liver dysfunction. The average age of patients was 7.47 years. The interval time from latest oestrus to onset is averagely 5.9 weeks. The concentration of serum progesterone of patients was 0.22 0.2947 ng/mL, serum estrodiol concentration was 2.74 0.9588 pg/mL, there is no difference with normal values. According to the report by Feldman,Blendinger,Bosschere et al., when serum progesterone concentration was under 0.5ng/mL and estrodiol under 25pg/ml, the bitch ison the anestrus phase. Most patients used in this experiment should be on anestrus stage. Bacteria examination were positive from cultivated uterine fillings of 19 among 32 cases and other 13 cases were negative, indicating that bacteria infection happened in most patients. Most patients also showed the histophathological changes of endometrium with various degrees of cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and inflammation. Thickeness of endometrium was observed in most open-cervix cases. Atrophy of endomtrium was observed in most closed-cervix cases. When CEH occurs in the endometrial gland in closed-cervix cases, pathological changes such as spuamous metaplasia and adenomatoid lesion can be found in endepidermis of endomitrium, and permanent or cystoid corpus luteum could be also observed. Conclusion: Dehydration, increased WBC, and nuclear shift to the left usually appeared in patients clinically. Nephric and liver dysfunction were also occurred in canine pyometra. The lateral abdomen radiography was important for the diagnoses in canine pyometra. Most patients in Nanjing area were on the anestrus stage. Due to the prolonged stimulation of low concentration of serum progesterone and estrogen to the uterus, various degree CEH occurred in endometrial glands, resulting in bacterial infection and pyometra.
