The Study Of Zhaoqing City Commercial District Development After 1840

As a region of commerce concentrated, commercial district is the most active, sensitive and elemental part of city. Considering that its is closely related to the city political situation, economic status and civic living standards, commercial district could always become the reputation of the whole city development in each history period. Thus, there is always great significance in the study of the commercial district development, both in investigation about the history city and guidelines framing to the future city.As a national historic and cultural city of China, the city of Zhaoqing has been founded in purpose of defense in Han dynasty almost 2000 years ago. In Song dynasty, while the city transfered toward the west, the guard wall was built up and the basic form of today's city came out. After the prosperity in Ming and Qing Dynasties, construction of city traffic system and remove of guard wall in the period of the Republic of China leaded to appearance of modern city. Nowadays, Zhaoqing city is deferent from former period, both in its range and structure. While the development of the whole Zhaoqing city, commercial district also has been in a changing status of consistency, not only in its position and range, but also in its form, structure and composing.Main purpose of this paper is to summarize characteristics of Zhaoqing city commercial district evolution in the past 170 years and to table a proposal for its future development. The study include three primary parts: first, by investigation and interview, find out the process of Zhaoqing city and commercial district evolution; second, by the study of deferent levels, summarize characteristics of Zhaoqing city commercial district evolution; third, base on the study of history, work out guidelines for the future development.
