Study On Commercial Space Development Of Xiamen Traditional Commercial District

The traditional commercial district in Xiamen is the main commercial center of Xiamen City and also important traditional streets reflecting the recent history. With more and more new commercial center built one after another, the traditional commercial district’s advantages of commercial and historic elements are gradually disappearing with its commercial environment aging and pattern losing balance. It is urgent to find solutions to renew and develop the traditional commercial districts in the changing trend. This paper is intended to find an appropriate strategy for developing and renewing the traditional commercial district in Xiamen based on the analysis on human behavior pattern characteristics and commercial space format in the traditional commercial district of Xiamen.Firstly, research of the traditional commercial district of Xiamen is conducted as an opening to analyze the existing problems; related theories home and abroad are involved to analyze the historical and related factors of the research object and content; filed survey of the real conditions is conducted as a basis for this paper.Secondly, doing observation and research on the human behavior pattern charateristics of people in the traditional commercial district of Xiamen with different levels of needs; analyzing the street space characteristics and commercial structural characteristics (industry compositional characteristics, commercial space layout, land use, which of above is to conclude the commercial and space characteristics of traditional commercial district of in Xiamen and to reveal the existing problems.Finally, on the basis of the aforementioned studies, from the perspective of city streets texture, space environment, business structure,"land" use, the traditional "pedestrian zone" concept and other aspects of the traditional commercial district of Xiamen, several points are raised regarding the strategy to renew and develop the traditional commercial district with expect that it will develop towards an organic new direction.Most of the previous studies on the traditional commercial street in Xiamen are without or lack of qualitative research, or just focusing on one aspect., Compared with them, this paper systematically does qualitative analysis on the the commercial space of traditional commercial district from multiple perspectives based on field research, which is intended to explore the feasibility of a development and renewal strategies.
