With the great development of highway construction in the China, highway testing methods need constantly improving. However, the testing methods applied in our country are relatively backward. For example, the testing of surface thickness still depends on the methods of tube sample boring, and hand measuring; the testing of the designations of structure layer compacted thickness, and water content relies on artificial methods, such as, circular soil cutter,sand-injection method, These methods are not only inefficient and poorly representative, but also destructive to roads. Although many units have introduced some advanced testing equipments, due to the lack of corresponding technology, standards, and specifications, these equipments cannot fully play their roles, Which is greatly incompatible with the highway construction in our country. Therefore, to accelerate the development of high-speed and high-efficiency testing technology is one of the imminent issues to be solved.GPR is a new type of highway nondestructive testing equipment, of quickness (80km/h) and precision. It can be operated continuously and test many aspects of a highway. It directly gains subsurface section images on real time imaging disposal of testing data and has a wide application foreground. GPR has attracted worldwide attention since its invention. This paper makes an all-ground analysis of GPR, makes introductions to the progress of radar development, composition of equipments and testing theory, and studies various applications of GPR, based on plenty of engineering practice. The emphasis is on the testing of pavement structure thickness and the study of other theories and applications of highway, combined with relative engineering cases.GPR, as a quick, high-precision, non-touching and nondestructive testing tool, can be extensively introduced to the quality control of highway engineering and the assessment of completion acceptance. As GPR has rich reflected signals, further research and analysis of it is necessary, with expectation of its more extensive application.
