Economic globalization and culture competition are the key issues of urban growth today. Sustainable development can be kept only if a city adapts to globalization while protects and strengthens its cultural identity. Nowadays, enough importance hasn't been attached to the bottom-up strength of development, which exists in the citizens'living spaces in where the urban culture is born, relative to the top-down urban planning and design as well as the managerial mechanism. As an important form of self-adjusting of city, spontaneous renewal can alleviate the trend of excessive functionalization to a certain degree. The study on the urban spontaneous renewal is a supplement to the methods of urban planning, urban design and architecture design. It can make the two development patterns harmonize together and then enhance the cities' culturality, sociality and the organic self-adjusting function to the problems. The current development of Chongqing has supplied many conditions to the bottom-up spontaneous renewal. A great number of cases from investigation make up the important study bases of this paper. Combining with the investigation, the study starts from the real events. Drawing on the experiences of the renewal cases in the western developed countries, it poses several methods of architecture and urban design to resolve the problems of city development. This paper is divided into seven chapters:Chapter 1: Preface.Chapter 2: The background studies on the urban spontaneous renewal spaces.Chapter 3: The spontaneous renewal of urban districts.Chapter 4: The spontaneous renewal of partial urban public spaces.Chapter 5: The spontaneous renewal of single buildings or structures.Chapter 6: Inspirations of design method from the urban spontaneous renewal spaces.Chapter 7: Conclusions.
