The Chongqing down area, as the center of politics, economy and culture in the past of three thousands years, factually reflects the history circumstance of the Chongqing's social and economy, contains the abundant nature and humanism landscape, preserves a lot of traditional residential areas and living fragments. Today, the past of prosperity has got down. But, with the constant advancing of city function in the central area, the down area is bond to be the next strategy emphases of development, hi the past, the city construction has excessively depended on the exploitation of the land resource, ignoring the excavation of the city historic environment. This has not only led to the demolishing of the historic environment, but also caused many socio-economic problems in the down area.So, in new time, the urban regeneration should firstly continue the history-culture of city and reshape the space of city, which are the socio-economic resources. Secondly, the urban regeneration relies on the exploitation of real estate. Therefore, an essential question has been raised as to how to regenerate the Chongqing down area, which represents the style of mountain-city and river-city, through the exploitation of city's history and culture. It falls into five chapters: Part I : Preface. Part II: Firstly, this part reviews the development history of the down area, andsecondly, analyses the present situation and the causes, and finally, concludesthe urban rebuilding of the down area. Part III: Through analyzing the facing plight and the latent capacity of the down area,this part puts forward the main ideas and models. Part IV: This part is made up of two chapters. It mainly discusses how to improve thedown area's development from two aspects. Part V: Conclusion and suggestion.
