Academic Ideology Of Prof. Changgen Zhao(Chapter Two)

This article is the first academics paper which touches integrated researches and comprehensive summary about chief expert Professor Zhao Changgeng, his life experiences and academic thinking, who was very active in the cutting edge of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture in the western areas during last century. Mr. Zhao Changgeng, his roles in the center stage of academic filed, makes him could fully understand building evolutions of New China, but also creatively inject his academic ideas into practical world. Mr. Zhao Changgeng's theoretical evolutions though his various academic phases is a miniature of our new era of major architecture disciplines and switches between different research aspect. This paper based on the era when our country is under great reforms which concerns all kinds of social fields and increasing process of the city expansion , trying to research on his practical projects and analyze his academic insights to trace the tracks of developments for contemporary Chinese architecture theory from a micro perspective. I hope this article could provide some technical support and research experiences for the scenic area planning, mountain urban design, historical city protection and development, and traditional field of landscape planning.This article seeks to analyze and dissect Professor Zhao Changgeng's academic theory based on accurate interpretations of the already existing literature reviews, which is also combined with comprehensive understanding of his later years of life experience from the controversial prospective between the old and new ideology. In this paper, I select the most five representative and essential areas from his large academic ideology system to analyze one by one, and try to create my own views based on previous researches. My theory is as follows:Concerns about strategic planning on the urban development research, Professor Zhao Changgeng proposed strategic vision for tourism development in Hainan Island Hainan Island, through participation in research of urban culture and tourism development. He firstly review from the "history", "Poetry," "painting" and "traveling," "Love" these five aspects, with his unique perspective, end up evaluating the history and culture of Hainan Province. And get the conclusions of its historical development path and close relationship to the mainland; then from the status advantages, After the first time Hainan decided to choose tourism development as the proposed strategic development objectives; and for Sanya, Haikou, Tongshi these three key areas , he proposed to make difference localization and development strategy, in order to reduce the loss of interest impacted by the competitions, and to accelerate the whole Hainan Island cities and regions to achieve developments at same time.Concerns about scenic area planning, Professor Zhao Changgeng was involved in large-scale planning projects for scenic area in Dazu, Jiangyou Mountain, Hechuan Diaoyu. Analysis from these projects, we can clearly find the slight differences between his methods and other experts'theories. He often begins with digging its rich cultural and tourism values from historical perspective, then linked scenic area protection with the development together without over emphasizing on protections for different zones. The principles highlighted in the plan adhere to the concept of full protection, and to enrich the explicit protection of the site. At the same time, during 80-90 years, Professor Zhao Changgeng, try to apply the divided-stage development approach, following the lead of researching on the operation from the scenic area, the cost of inputs, capital recovery and the psychological experience of tourists and touring process.On the protection of historical and cultural city district filed, though the analysis of Dujiangyan Historic City Conservation Planning designed by Professor Zhao Changgeng, we could sum up his core idea in this area which is to extend previous research did by scholars and approach focuses and innovation of the following three aspects: first of all clearly set aside protected areas and conservation areas, and negate the contemporary society of its "more planning more wide" phenomenon; and from road widening and infrastructure construction and other aspects of historical and cultural cities of the urban renewal issue, raised both renewings and protections of historical and cultural city are the core of conservation planning; Finally, the overall planning, detailed planning, building design is the same three phases of work, particularly in the areas of historical and cultural relics protection and their coordination is especially important.On traditional areas of garden planning. After Professor Zhao Changgeng started researching on landscape architecture, he participated in a number of garden planning and design projects. His works, mostly continue the simple, natural and elegant characteristics of West Sichuan, without over decorating. The designs are mainly focused on site-choosing, organization and route planning.About the book "History and Culture of West Sichuan famous memorial garden." the "historical and cultural celebrities Memorial West Sichuan" written by Professor Zhao Changgeng is the first book in the history which systematically refine the West Sichuan garden from epic paintings of tour four prospective to study. In the book he not only explains in details of nine famous historical and cultural memorial garden in West Sichuan region to commemorate the character, organization, architectural features and landscape conception, but also made a detailed record and interpretation of its poetry couplets. From the book, we could see his comprehensive insight and rich knowledge above the culture and professional fields. In addition, I also particularly refined the differences between West Sichuan Gardens, the Royal gardens, temple gardens and private gardens which are reflected from his studies.In addition, Professor Zhao Changgeng has designed large amounts of projects, some of which were lost because of years and poor preservations, including the overall plan for Yibin City, Master Plan for Scenic Area in Emei Mount, Huashan park in Nanchuan. It is a real lost for the whole academic fields.As an integral part of a thorough study, in the end of this paper, Professor Zhao Changgeng's achievement on academic theory is evaluated based on a macro prospective. Research experience is summed up and the existence of defects in this study is also pointed out in this article.
