Now experimental study of underwater target echo is one of major development of active acoustic detection technology, which is inseparable from the support of Hardware. As a key equipment in the hardware system, signal conditioner and acoustic transponder must fulfil the requirements of measurement of acoustic echo characteristics.This article first introduces the theoretical of echo characteristics, experimental and the development of key equipment, and then analyzes the three methods for measuring the target echo characteristics and key equipment. According to the the characteristics of target echo signals which are from experimental in mogan hill, we set the specifications of signal conditioner and acoustic transponder.According to the determinate specifications, this paper completes the design and debugging of hardware and software of signal conditioner and acoustic transponder. Making the ultra-low consumption MSP430 as the Main Control Unit (MCU) and touch screen as the interface of man-computer interaction, the signal conditioner succeeds in echo time delay, gain accurate control and setting, using options or input in the user interface, which can be adopted in the choice of echo sequences and frequencies. Acquisition delay time and forwarding delay time can be setted by means of rotary encoders and LCD that are controlled by MSP430 of the acoustic transponder, which be of A/D,D/A and storing data function and uses the FPGA as the logic control unit.At last, the measurement system of underwater target echo characteristics is constructed with the signal conditioner and acoustic transponder which are designed in this paper, and by means of detecting the target on the lake and processing experimental data, the results show that the experiments designed in this paper are satisfied and could meet the requirement of experiment.
