Design, as one of the most important part of modern society, related to economy and culture,plays an absolutely important role in planning and construction of the society. In the 20thcentury, we face an increasingly designed society, people found design has become therepresentation of the human field of cultural studies. Because design can provide more historicaldata and it has become very important things of Science, technology, social studies, studying ofhuman culture has become more tangible and real. Thus, people pay more and more attention tothe history of design.Sigfried Giedion (1888–1968) was a Swiss historian and critic of architecture. He was arenowned design and architecture critic and had been regarded as one of the first designhistorians. He has some famous works, such as "Space, Time And Architecture" and"Mechanization Takes Command". With "Space, Time,And Architecture" Giedion wrote aninfluential standard history of modern architecture. "Mechanization Takes Command"established a new kind of historiography.In this thesis, Siegfried Gideon and his design theory will be presented basically, On theother hand, from the perspective of design history, a new kind of historiography whichestablished in "Mechanization Takes Command" was also studied through the compare withNicholas Pevsner's book "Modern Design Pioneers - From William Morris to Gropius". Basedon the design concepts proposed by Sigfried Giedion, the study of design should be introduced abroader cultural research methods. Common culture and popular culture would be explained bySiegfried Giedion. And the mechanization's influence of modern civilization and society shouldbe reflected.
