Professor Sun Xiaoxiang is an outstanding scholar who is extremely erudite and plays an important role in the development of modern Chinese garden. He is famous as not only a garden master, horticulturalist, plant ecologist, but also architect and earth planner. Since 1946, professor Sun has practiced and researched landscape architecture for more than 60 years. He always stays the beginning of the development of the academic subject, no matter from the garden aesthetics of habitat, painting habitat and artistic conception to the biosystems engineering of city environment green livings; from Huagangguanyu garden to Xishuangbanna tropical botanic garden; or from forest gardening teaching and research group to school of design for landscape planning.This thesis systematically introduces professor Sun's main theory contributions and the profound influences that he brought to landscape architecture education. What's more, the article reveals Mr. Sun's special way and idea of design and deep connotation inside so as to enrich and develop Chinese landscape architecture theory and practice according to the analysis of Mr. Sun's classical master pieces of landscape architecture and further research of design concept and style. Around such theme, the article contains six aspects as follows:The thesis states the formative process and reasons of professor Sun's design philosophy of landscape architecture and discloses the secret why the tree of his design evergreen for more than 60 years according to the study of Mr. Sun's family environment, education background and work experience.Mr. Sun's key resources of design idea come from traditional Chinese gardens, landscape painting theory, English natural gardens and Japanese gardens, which are explained in detail in this article. This paper shows that modernism and classicism is the theoretical basis and design materials. However, naturalism is the philosophical foundation of the deep content in his gardens. It also points out that Mr. Sun's design target is to establish the harmonious relationship between nature and human beings.The article presents Mr. Sun's major theory contributions for 60 years: the main content of"habitat, painting habitat and artistic conception", the process of writing"Garden art and design"and its main point, the theory of landscape system of the city, landscape planning theory.Moreover, chapter five introduces the enormous contributions Mr. Sun has done to Chinese landscape architecture education and unremitting efforts for the foreigners to know ancient and modern Chinese gardens.The thesis explains professor Sun's main representative works from different levels and angles. Three characteristics can be concluded from the form of design, that is: inheritance and innovation of Chinese traditional methods of gardening, rich and changeable garden space, and great emphasis on ecological protection and planting design.On the basis of introduction of works and analysis of characteristics, the paper further explores how Mr. Sun's style form and summarize what the methods he usually uses from the aspect of social background as below:First, he arranges garden layout following the theory and guidance of Chinese painting.Second, he has a good command of concordance and contrast.Third, he would like to bridge and shift the place and context.Fourth, he firmly grasps the element of color, light and sound. That is the primary description to how his design ideas form and develop. After the introduction and analysis of four aspects above, in the conclusion part, the article puts forward more deep thinking on the whole to Mr. Sun's works and thoughts on the background of contemporary garden design industry. Therefore, it reveals the development clue during Mr. Sun's whole design life: inheritance and innovation and the then the conclusion to his theoretical contributions and design conception.
